VIA UMBERTO PAVONI 19 GROTTAFERRATA Italy |
The Frascati hillside wine area just south of Rome is an alternative to staying in the city. Before opening its doors in 1997, the 16th-century Villa Grazioli undertook ten years of tedious restoration work-it was imperative to conserve the architecture, grounds, and the many important frescoed ceilings by G.P. Pannini. After the restoration it was transformed into a splendid hotel under the strict regulations of the Ministry of Historical Buildings. The spacious reception area and four inviting frescoed sitting rooms on the first floor remind us that this was once a private residence. Ten spacious double rooms and two suites are offered right in the villa off the impressive galleria-a head-spinning vaulted hall completely frescoed from floor to ceiling, overlooking the front garden. The remaining more standard rooms are located across the garden in what was originally the lemon-tree greenhouse, all decorated conservatively with antiques and rich fabrics and offering all the modern amenities. An underground tunnel connects the two buildings. The four formal, high-ceilinged dining rooms have an enormous terrace taking in the surrounding park, Italian gardens, and a panoramic view over Rome. Besides being close to both airports, the hotel has a shuttle service to Frascati, Rome, or the local train station.
