10 best buildings to see in New York
The Center for Architecture (the American Institute for Architects
chapter in New York) and its head Rick Bell named 10 best buildings to see in
New York. Note that buildings everybody is familiar with, like the Empire State
Building, were not included. Here is the list:
Conde Nast Building on Times Square. Built in 1996-1999, by Fox and
Fowle Architects, this 260-meter skyscraper is not only an outstanding
architectural structure, but is also eco friendly: the building uses air quality
and energy conservation systems.
Brooklyn Museum, with the new facade added to the old building in 2004.
The glass and steel structure looks functional, attractive and modern.
Prada New York (in Soho), by Rem Koolhaas, was opened in 2001. Rick Bell comments that "It displays the merchandise, it doesn’t sell it."
Rose Center for Earth and Space (pictured) at the American Museum of Natural History, is an illuminated 87-foot diameter sphere, which seems to be
floating in a huge glass cube.
Apple Store in Soho looks like a 1920s stone and brick post office. The
building is designed by Ronnette Riley and Bohlin Cywinski Jackson.
The list also includes such structures as the modern-style Grand Central Terminal, Morgan Library expansion, Chrysler Building – an elegant
example of art-deco style, the 42-storied Hearst Tower and the glass box-looking
Seagram Building.
