No mobile phones on Austrian public transport
Siegfried Nagel, Mayor of the southern Austrian city Graz, issued a ban
on mobile phones on trams and other public transport. 68% of citizens, annoyed
with constant buzz and noise, support the regulation. Loud music will also be
banned. However, offenders of the ban will not be fined for refusing to turn
their ringtones off, and it is hard to predict what effects the regulation will
have.
Some experts say that the ban could discourage young and business
people, most of whom can’t do without their mobile phones, from using public
transport. When using internet access and sending sms, citizens will have to
switch the sound off.
Graz is the first city worldwide to issue the ban of the kind. Several
other Austrian cities could also consider the measure.
