Munich celebrates its 850th birthday
In 2008 the capital of the German state of Bavaria, Munich, celebrates
its 850th birthday. Needless to say, its
citizens are preparing for a huge event. The city was initially just a
monastery. The birth of Munich is officially assumed to the year 1158, when Duke
Henry the Lion destroyed a bridge over the Isar river and constructed a new one,
thanks to which Munich granted the official city status. In the XIII century
Munich belonged to the Wittelsbach dynasty, and later – the ducal residence of
Upper Bavaria.
The motto of this important event is “Building bridges”. The
anniversary will be celebrated with several activities. First, June
14th -
15th the city guests can participate in the
City foundation festival. The festival takes place at the Marienplatz, which
will offer music and dance performances, craftsmarket and a children’s area. The
Old Town Ring Road festival takes place
19th -
20th June. The most romantic is the Isar
Bridge festival (1st -
3rd August), with light installations,
music under the bridge, dancing on the riverbanks, reflections on the water.
Plus to this, lots of performances, concerts, cabarets and exhibitions are
expected throughout the summer, especially on week-ends.
