Mediterranean diet to become UNESCO heritage
Italy suggests uniting efforts with other Mediterranean countries (Spain,
Greece and Morocco) to apply for the nomination of UNESCO Intangible Cultural
Heritage.
The advantages of the so-called «Mediterranean diet» are acknowledged by many
nutritionists. Low-calorie, consisting of cereals, fruit and vegetables like
tomatoes, vegetable marrows, broccoli, fish (tuna and anchovy), and olive oil,
it helps overcome arthritis, obesity, asthma and cardiovascular diseases.
The application will be drawn in August. UNESCO will examine different cultural, historical, social and landscape aspects of the diet and will announce
its decision in 2009.
Some time ago the President of France Nicolas Sarkozy has also stated that he
wants French cuisine to be recognised as the UNESCO World Heritage.
