Ancient necropolis found in Thessaloniki
Greece still has a lot of archaeological treasures stored within
its territory. One of the latest discoveries is an ancient necropolis in
Thessaloniki revealed during excavations for a subway system. There were around 1000
graves found, most dating from the Roman and Byzantine periods. The oldest of
them might have appeared there in 5 century BC – note that officially the city
was founded in around 315 BC by the King Cassander of Macedon.
Most graves are found east of the city centre, another small
necropolis with around 100 graves was revealed close to the train station.
Graves contain jewellery, coins and other artifacts.
Construction of the subway system in Thessaloniki was initiated
in 2006 and is scheduled to finish in 2012. With such a success, more
archaeological treasures could be found.
