Plaza hotel in New York reopens
The famous Plaza hotel in New York is
back to work after a 3-year renovation. Last Saturday, March 1st,
thousands of tourists and New Yorkers arrived to the Fifth Avenue to see its
grand opening. Many of them said they had only seen the hotel in movies and
newspapers, which comes as no surprise since this was the place for Marilyn
Monroe’s famous photo session and the wedding of Richard Nixon’s daughter Julie.
The hotel also appeared in the episodes of such movies as Crocodile Dundee, King
of New York and Home Alone 2. Famous hotel guests were The Beatles and architect
Frank Lloyd Wright.
Initially it was planned to turn the
rooms into condominiums. But this was opposed by preservationists and the hotel
workers’ union, and as a result Elad Properties, the hotel’s owners, preserved
Plaza’s 282 rooms from the 805 original ones, and equipped 181 apartments.
Works included restoration of the
colored-glass ceiling over the Palm Court, and renovation of the court itself.
The renovated rooms combine latest technology and classic luxury. Amenities
include flat screens, iPod Modules and other equipment. The rooms are
classic-style, with gold sinks and mosaic floors.
Guests can order an "Eloise" bubble
bath, with milk and cookies. There will also be an Oak Bar restored by the
hotel’s official opening May 10th.
