London gets green
London is likely to become the most ecologically safe
city in Britain. The city mayor Ken Livingstone (pictured) strives for the
improvement of air quality and promises to continue his fight with pollution.
The first measure is greater restrictions on heavy
traffic. February 5th great part of London will become a “Low
Emission Zone” (LEZ). This means reduction in number of lorries in the city
centre. Furthermore, by summer 2008 these restrictions will be extended to all
lorries, buses and coaches.
Ken Livingstone comments that this will be a day
of importance for those who suffer from asthma and other pulmonary diseases. Mr.
Livingstone plans to continue this policy during his four years in
office.
Henceforth diesel
lorries over 12 tonnes will have to pass strict controls. Otherwise, they will
have to pay a fine of up to £1000 a day.
