Each pigeon costs 23 euro to Venice!
The Italian economic association counted, that the habitants of
Venice give 23 euro on each “resident” pigeon. The pigeons of San-Marko square
in Venice costs 275 euro per year to every habitant. The tax-payers pay this sum
for cleaning monuments, fresco and other sites. It’s told, that an amount of
pigeons has increased by ¼ for last year, it’s connected with very warm winter.
The mayor of Venice thinks that for reduction charges on birds, will be enough
to remove stalls with maize for pigeons from the square. Each stall sales a few
centners of maize per day. Hundreds of tourists come here to feed up pigeons on
San-Marco square. Earlier the administration of Venice was going to introduce
entrance fee and even with prior reserving for stay tourists in the city.
However, the department of Tourism of Italy didn’t support innovations of the
administration of Venice and declared that the city belongs to the whole world,
and not to hollow of local officials.
